Magic Grows Up
Magic is a classic art form but one that has often been relegated (along with puppetry and mime) to children’s entertainment.
In recent years, however, magic has cast aside its top hat and cape for a more sophisticated style appealing to grown-up audiences.
From Matt Franco’s 2014 win on America’s Got Talent to a feature article in American Theatre magazine, magic has experienced a rebirth in the entertainment world — with venues sprouting up around the country to support this resurgence. From New York’s Monday Night Magic to Chicago’s Magic Lounge to Hollywood’s Magic Castle.
Now the Denver Magic Show looks to bring grown-up caliber magic to a Colorado audiences with an inaugural show coming to the Avenue Theatre on Monday, June 4th at 7:30pm.
The show brings four magicians to the stage who have honed their skills working in the grown-up world of corporate events and trade shows. Each magician (William Rader, Gregg Tobo, Brandon K Parker, and Shawn Preston) brings their own style and personality to the evening to present a wide spectrum of magic.
The 90-minute show, produced in partnership with WellAttended and Denver’s Avenue Theatre will be the first of a series of monthly offerings. Future shows will take place on the first Monday of each month and feature multiple magicians including a headliner.
Why the sudden interested in magic for grown-ups? Magician Gregg Tobo says, “I think that in the hyper-connected age of information, magic is restorative and rejuvenating. It allows people to explore a world where they can relax and say, ‘I don’t know.’
With the debut of the Denver Magic Show, grown-ups may discover their own magical fountain of youth.
