See Magic the First Thursday of Every Month!
Magic as a performing art has experienced a sudden boom in popularity with magic venues sprouting up all across the United States. The city of Denver is now home to several magic shows. But, when it comes to magic for sophisticated audiences, the premier example of the nouveau magic show is the Denver Magic Show.
For almost a year, the show’s founders (Gregg Tobo and William Rader) have performed before sold out audiences while commanding top dollar for their limited-seating shows. After establishing a successful track record, they recently moved to a more upscale venue. They can now be seen on the first Thursday of every month at the Avenue Grill’s historic El Dorado Room.
At their last performance, Tobo and Rader performed miracles that happened right under the noses of astonished guests. In order to ensure the best experience, seating is limited to only 36 attendees. “Our goal,” says Rader, “is to provide an unforgettable, immersive experience, a night out that will make an indelible impression on our patrons.”
The dueling Denver magicians each perform half of a 90-minute show with each magus offering a different take on magic – one performing dexterous sleight-of-hand while the other performs feats of mental wizardry. But they leave the corny gags and hackneyed comedy behind, aiming instead for a more refined theatrical style.
Magic as an Art
Tobo and Rader readily admit that magic is often considered to be a low-brow art form but the Denver Magic Show is an active attempt to change that perception.
“The problem is that a lot of magic is performed without artistry.” says Tobo. “Too often, it’s only about perpetrating a deception. Of course, all art uses some form of deception, but the main goal is to provide an experience of emotion, catharsis, or epiphany. Elevating magic is about creating an experience beyond being fooled.”
Experience Magic from Expert Magicians
Their sense of artistry comes from hard work and thousands of hours in front of an audience. For the past ten years, Tobo has performed at theatre festivals across the country where he has won several awards for his show. By working alongside artists in the theatre, he began to develop his skills as a storyteller and an actor.
Rader honed his skills performing at corporate events where he is paid top dollar to entertain executives who spend long days submerged in training and presentations. By working in these challenging situations he cultivated the skills necessary to engage and entertain. It’s a high stakes world where an entertainer can make or break an event.
While the two magicians still travel the country, they continue to make time for their monthly appearance at the celebrated Avenue Grill, reserving the first Thursday of the month to offer a premium show for Denver residents and visitors.
“The El Dorado Room is the ideal place to experience magic,” says Rader. “Today, it is commonplace to see magic on television or on YouTube, but the best magic is seen live and up close.”
The Denver Magic Show offers a rare opportunity to witness jaw-dropping feats of sleight-of-hand and mental mysteries in a near perfect environment.
