After one year of producing monthly shows, William Rader and Gregg Tobo will make the Denver Magic Show a weekly event. Beginning July 22, at the Patterson Inn, the Denver Magic Show will run every Monday night for the foreseeable future.
“Our first year in business was designed to test the market,” says Rader. “And the demand for a grownup magic show in Denver has been strong enough to warrant moving to a weekly format.”
With magic playing a prominent role on television shows like “America’s Got Talent” and “Fool Us,” a new generation is rediscovering the magic show. Until recently, magic was considered to be primarily for children, but today the demographics have changed dramatically with Millennials showing a new appreciation for the art.
Tobo says, “Our show is modeled after successful magic shows that we saw taking place in larger cities like Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago. We felt that there was niche to be filled in the Denver market.”
Marketing trends aside, Rader and Tobo’s magic is very strong – on par with anything you see on television. And in a sense it’s even stronger because it’s actually happening right under your nose. Witnessing the impossible can have a delightful destabilizing effect, producing giddy laughter, as it makes you question the nature of the world around you. One leaves the show feeling uplifted with astonishment.
Rader and Tobo perform a wide array of magic, performing in the classical style, reading minds, and doing super-human mental calculations. They bring in a guest performer to keep things fresh so that every week is a different show. The room is cozy and intimate (seating about 30) and everyone gets to experience the magic up close.
The venue itself is a real-life castle nestled in Capitol Hill. Originally built in 1891, it is now a boutique hotel with 9 luxury suites. The owner, Chris Chiari, wanted to bring arts and culture back to the Croke-Patterson castle, to make it a Denver gathering place like it was in bygone ages. And the castle itself has a mysterious history with numerous ghostly sightings, so hosting a weekly magic show was a natural fit.
If you have an itch for fun and astonishment calibrated for a sophisticated grownup audience, check out the Denver Magic Show on Monday nights.
