Monday nights at the historic Patterson Inn just turned magical. Starting July 1st, the Denver Magic Show brings their sophisticated sleight-of-hand and mental mysteries to the landmark mansion in the form of a weekly show.
The Croke-Patterson mansion, constructed in 1891, has been home to many Denver dignitaries and a healthy complement of ghosts. Since 2013 the mansion has been an upscale bed-and-breakfast with nine luxury suites. And now is home to a weekly magic cabaret featuring Denver’s best mystery performers.
William Rader and Gregg Tobo have been hosting their Denver Magic Show for over a year and have sold more than 500 tickets to their exclusive shows. “We’re excited to move to a weekly format now that we’ve built some momentum in the neighborhood,” says Rader.
When he is not producing magic in Denver, Tobo travels around the country performing at theater festivals; Rader focuses on high-end corporate clients. Their extensive stage time has given them the background needed to produce a weekly show and the timing was perfect.
“Over the last couple of years, magic has caught the attention of grown-up audiences,” says Tobo. “Magic has been showing up on television, in Las Vegas Showrooms, and on stages in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles – now it’s Denver’s turn for a new kind of magic show.”
Older generations may remember the magician dressed in top coat and tails pulling a rabbit from a hat. A younger generation recalls seeing the magician as clown performing for children. But today’s magician is neither so elevated nor so debased.
A new age of magic has arrived. Magicians who take their craft seriously and who dare to engage with critical and discerning minds. In age of ironic detachment a new wave of magicians asks us to believe in the impossible. And grown up audiences are rediscovering the fun and wonder of going to a magic show.
The curated selection of magicians (usually 3 or 4 each show) all have experience working for corporate clients so their acts are designed to please sophisticated audiences.
And now, tucked away in a landmark mansion on Capitol Hill, the Denver Magic Show makes your Mondays a bit more magical.
