Denver Magic Show: Rubik’s Cube Draws Standing Ovation

By April 15, 2019 May 15th, 2019 No Comments

On the first Thursday of every month, patrons pay top dollar to see magic in an intimate setting in the Avenue Grill’s historic El Dorado Room. That is the home of the Denver Magic Show which features two of Denver best magicians performing in an upscale and exclusive setting.

At last month’s show, William Rader offered up surprising visual miracles with coins, playing cards, and metal rings. Seating in the El Dorado Room is limited to 36 making it an ideal venue for this style of up close magic.

But it was Gregg Tobo’s performance that drew a standing ovation to close the show.

In an extended performance that featured Tobo multiplying numbers in his head, memorizing a pack of playing cards, and displaying his mastery of over 1,000 digits of Pi, it was his demonstration with three Rubik’s Cubes and a blindfold that brought the audience to their feet – a stunning demonstration of the incredible power of his analytical brain.

When asked about the standing ovation Tobo shrugged and replied, “The real secret is that they don’t give a standing ovation for my skill with a Rubik’s Cube. They give a standing ovation for a feeling that I’ve imparted to them – the jubilant feeling of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.”

The Denver Magic Show has been running for 11 months now and continues to draw capacity crowds. After performing for seven months in 99-seat theatre, Rader and Tobo decided to move their show to a smaller venue. “We wanted to deliver a premium experience to our guests,” says Rader. “We wanted to create a show where you felt like the magic was happening right under your nose.”

When not performing locally, Rader travels the country performing magic for his corporate clients, entertaining employees during sales meetings or drawing crowds with his magic on the trade show floor. Tobo, on the other hand, prefers to take his show to arts centers and theatre festivals around the country, spending weeks at a time on the road.

Both, however, enjoy having a Denver show to come home to. “When you’re on the road, can’t always do the magic you want to do; you have to adjust your show to fit the venue,” says Tobo. “But the El Dorado Room has become a place where can bring out our best material.”

Rader agrees, “Our residency here has allowed us to offer our audiences the best magic in Denver.”
