R Black Commissioned for Denver Magic Show Posters

By September 19, 2019 September 26th, 2019 No Comments

We recently commissioned R Black to design posters for our Denver Magic Show. He has an amazing style and has designed posters for theaters such as the San Diego Opera. He is also creating his version of a deck of tarot cards.

The challenge with creating the design for the Denver Magic Show is that we showcase different magicians in Denver. So, the poster couldn’t feature a specific magician since we change our lineup every week. We also wanted to get away from magic clichés. Often, people think magic is for children or that magic is equal to pulling a rabbit from a hat.

When you attend the Denver Magic Show, you feel as if you go back in time to watch magic from the Vaudeville era of the late 1890s to early 1930s. The show seats 20 – 30 guests and the magic happens up close. It’s as if you are sitting in the parlor of a friend’s home. The evening is also sophisticated with custom cocktails and guests dressing in cocktail attire.

The poster R Black designed is a throwback to the classic magicians of the Vaudeville era. Many magic posters from that time feature imps sitting on the shoulders of magicians, magicians performing in tuxedos, and bold fonts touting the names of the performers. Just by looking at our poster you can sense a feeling of mystery and that the show is for adults.

You may also notice the white gloves which are similar to what Cardini wore while performing difficult sleight of hand. Cardini is one of the most famous magicians touring the Vaudeville circuit in the 1900s. He was part of the British Army in WWI and practiced sleight of hand in the freezing trenches while wearing gloves. This later became the signature piece in his act. You can see him a rare performance of his act below.

We’d love for you to join us next Monday at the Denver Magic Show. The show features William Rader and Gregg Tobo as well as special guest performers every week. No two shows are the same.

Tickets are $30 for General Admission and $40 for VIP Seating. Tickets also include a cocktail from our bar.
